Then the World-Honoured One further told the monk Saṃgharakṣita: 'The first bottle that you saw—was it not a bottle? It is a person in hell. In the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, he was a renunciant who managed the kitchen on behalf of the Saṃgha. What should have been eaten in the morning he kept until the next day, and what should have been eaten the next day he kept until the third day. Because of these causes and conditions, he entered hell and became a great bottle of flesh, burned by fire and enduring suffering without ceasing down to the present day. The second bottle—he was a renunciant. When donors presented jars of ghee to offer to the Saṃgha present, which should have been distributed to each person, this person in charge saw that there were visiting monks and held [the ghee] back in secret, distributing it only after the visiting monks had left. Because of these causes and conditions, he entered hell and became a great bottle of flesh, burned by fire and enduring suffering without ceasing down to the present day.'
