Then the World-Honoured One further told the monk Saṃgharakṣita: 'The spring that you saw was a person in hell. In the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, he was an ordained novice who managed the honey for the Saṃgha. He tasted it first himself, and then gave the remnants to the Saṃgha, so that it was diminished and did not suffice for everyone. Therefore, he entered hell and became a great spring of flesh, boiling and rotting as it is burned by fire, enduring great anguish without ceasing down to the present day.'
