At that time, the World-Honoured One again addressed Saṃgharakṣita: 'The sumana pillar you saw at the very beginning was not truly a pillar; it is a denizen of hell. In the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, he was a monastic. When dānapatis of the four classes at the stūpa offered sumana flowers by scattering them before the Buddha, after the flowers dried, the monk swept them up and sold them, using [the proceeds] for himself. Therefore, he entered hell, where he became a sumana pillar burned by fire, suffering pain without respite even to this day.
