During the Song dynasty, the śramaṇa Zhu Huichi was a native of Xinye and resided in the Siceng Temple in Jiangling. He died in the second year of the Yongchu reign period. His disciples held a seven-day memorial service for him. On that day, toward evening, just as the burning of incense had finished, the śramaṇa Daoxian went to look after Huichi's disciples. In front of the room, he suddenly saw a dim, shadowy form resembling a human. Looking closely, it was Huichi. His appearance and clothing were no different from when he was alive. He said to Xian, 'Was the meat you ate this morning delicious?' Xian said, 'It was delicious.' Huichi said, 'Because I ate meat, I am now born in the Hungry Dogs Hell.' Daoxian was terrified and could not answer in time. Huichi spoke again: 'If you do not believe it, try looking behind my back.' He then turned his back to show Xian, who saw three yellow dogs, in form half resembling donkeys, their eyes gleaming with extremely red light that illuminated the inside of the room. They looked as if they were about to bite Huichi, but then stopped. Xian was stunned with fear and fainted away; only after a long while did he revive. He recounted the incident in full. (The preceding two cases are drawn from the Mingxiang ji).
