As the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'If one encounters sick persons of the five monastic assemblies on the road, one should promptly look for carts or draft animals to convey them, make offerings to them in accordance with the Dharma, and even when they die, one should cremate and bury them, and must not abandon them. There are nine factors by which a sick person is bound to suffer untimely death: first, greedily eating food known to be unwholesome; second, not knowing how to measure moderation; third, eating before earlier food is digested; fourth, picking at the throat to vomit food before it is digested; fifth, forcefully holding back what is digested and should be expelled; sixth, food not according with the illness; seventh, eating food that accords with the illness but without moderation; eighth, indolence; ninth, lack of wisdom.'
