Fifth, concerning the differences in mutual visibility: according to the Kośa-śāstra, intermediate existences of the same destiny of rebirth certainly see one another. If a person has the divine eye that is purest, being of the class of path wisdom, this person is also able to see that birth; if it is a karmically-acquired divine eye, one cannot see it, because [the intermediate existence] is most subtle. The Sarvāstivāda school says: If they are equally taking rebirth in the human destiny and are equally intermediate existences of the human destiny, they can mutually see one another; this principle is fixed. They cannot see the intermediate existences of other destinies. If a person has acquired the divine eye through cultivation, this divine eye is of the path class and can see the form of the intermediate existence; if it is a karmically-acquired divine eye, one cannot see the form of the intermediate existence, because the form of the intermediate existence is subtler than other forms. According to the Sammatīya school, an intermediate existence of the heavenly destiny is fully capable of seeing the form of the intermediate existences of the five destinies; an intermediate existence of the human destiny can see four destinies, excluding the intermediate existence of the heavenly destiny, which is not what it can see. In this gradual order, excluding the preceding ones, down to an intermediate existence of the hell destiny, excluding the intermediate existences of the four preceding destinies which are not what it sees, it sees only the intermediate existence of the hell destiny.
