The Daśabhāṇavāra-vinaya also says: At that time, there was a monk who did not chew a willow twig and his breath smelled foul. He reported this to the Buddha. The Buddha said, "I permit chewing willow twigs. There are five benefits: first, the mouth is not bitter; second, the mouth does not smell foul; third, it removes wind disorders; fourth, it removes heat illnesses; and fifth, it removes phlegm-fluid disorders. There are also another five benefits: first, it removes wind; second, it removes heat; third, it distinguishes flavors; fourth, one is able to eat; and fifth, the eyes are clear."
