As the Ekottarāgama Sūtra states: If one does not accomplish six things, one cannot leave behind the dust, depart from defilement, and attain the purity of the Dharma eye. What are the six? First, not delighting in hearing [the Dharma]; second, although hearing the Dharma, not listening attentively; third, not seeking to understand it; fourth, having not yet attained the Dharma, not applying expedient means to diligently seek it; fifth, having attained the Dharma, not guarding it well; sixth, not accomplishing compliant forbearance. Reversing these six, one can leave behind the dust and defilement and attain the purity of the Dharma eye.
