Now, it is heard that the virtue of patience is the most exalted; holding the precepts and practicing austerities cannot match it. For this reason, the monk Kṣānti suffered physical mutilation without resentment, and the master of kṣānti ṛṣis underwent dismemberment without anger. Furthermore, in the path of compassion, rescuing and delivering [others] comes first; in the heart of a bodhisattva, pity and sympathy are the function. One should constantly wander throughout the hells, taking upon oneself their suffering, extensively delivering sentient beings, and bestowing peace and joy upon their minds. How could one allow even a slight annoyance to give rise to great anger and hatred, leading even to glaring at one another with askance eyes, harsh words and severe countenances, subsequently applying sticks and staves, and harboring resentment that turns into enmity? Or fathers and sons, elder and younger brothers mutually harming one another, while friends and relatives inversely cause injury and damage—their evil rebellion exceeding that of owls, and their venom surpassing that of bees and scorpions. Consequently, through kalpas of enmity, it never ceases life after life.
