Although hearing many bad reputations,
The practitioner of austerities endures them.
One should not speak bitterly oneself,
Nor should one give rise to annoyance.
One who is terrified upon hearing a sound
Is like a beast in the forest;
Such a frivolous and restless sentient being
Does not accomplish the Dharma of leaving home.
The benevolent one should be able to bear
Inferior, middling, and superior evil words.
One whose mind is held firm and steadfast
Accords with the Dharma of leaving home.
It is not due to others' words
That you become a robber,
Nor is it due to others' words
That you attain the arhat state.
Just as you know it yourself,
All the devas also know it.
