As the *Dṛṣṭānta-sūtra* states: A śramaṇa in the kingdom of Rājagṛha sat and made a vow, saying: “If I do not attain the Way, I will never rise.” When he grew sleepy, he made an awl eight inches long and pierced his two thighs; in such pain, he could not sleep. In one year, he attained the Way. Furthermore, the *Vakkula-sūtra* states: Vakkula declared: “Ever since I left home, throughout eighty years, I have never lain down with my ribs touching a mat, nor has my back leaned against anything.”
