"If among the prohibitive precepts / One does not guard them with all one's heart, / One goes against great compassion. / Even a drop of liquor on the tip of a blade of grass / One would not dare taste or touch. / For this reason I know / Liquor is the cause of the evil realms. / The sūtras for householders / Expound the evil retributions of liquor; / Only a Buddha can discern them— / Who else could fathom them? / The Buddha taught that of the evil deeds / Of the three karmas of body, speech, and mind, / Liquor alone is the foundation. / One further falls into evil deeds: / In the past, an upāsaka, / Through the cause and condition of liquor, / Ended up breaking the remaining four precepts. / Such are called the list of evil deeds; / Liquor is the retribution of heedlessness. / By not drinking, one closes the evil realms; / One can obtain a mind of faith and joy, / Remove stinginess, and be able to give away wealth. / Śūra, hearing what the Buddha taught, / Was able to obtain immeasurable benefit. / I have no other thought whatsoever / Than that of breaking and violating [the precepts]. / To state it in brief: / I would rather give up hundreds of thousands of lives / Than violate the Buddha's teachings; / I would rather let my body wither and dry up / Than ever drink this liquor. / Even if, by violating the precepts, / One's lifespan were hundreds of thousands of years, / It would not compare to guarding the prohibitive precepts / And having one's body and life perish on the spot. / If it could definitely bring about a cure, / I would still not drink it; / How much less when it is not known for certain / Whether it will cure me or not!" / Having made this resolute resolve, / Great joy arose in his mind; / He immediately attained the vision of the true reality, / And his illness was dispelled.
