10.85

爾時珠師。語比丘言。何用多語。遂加繫縛倍更撾打。以繩急絞。耳眼鼻口盡皆血出。時彼鵝者即來食血。珠師瞋忿打鵝即死。比丘問言。此鵝死活。珠師答言。鵝今死活何足故問。時彼比丘即向鵝所。見鵝既死涕泣不樂。即向鵝說偈言。

At that time, the pearl borer said to the monk: 'What is the use of so much talk?' He then bound him further, doubled the beatings, and strangled him tightly with a rope, so that blood flowed from his ears, eyes, nose, and mouth. At that time, the goose came to feed on the blood. The pearl borer, in an outburst of anger, struck the goose, instantly killing it. The monk asked: 'Is this goose dead or alive?' The pearl borer replied: 'Whether the goose is dead or alive now, why bother asking?' At that time, the monk went to the goose's side; seeing that the goose was already dead, he wept and was grieved. He then spoke a verse to the goose:
