Daoshi says: Although the scriptures and treatises have been cited above to explain the many varieties of karmic causes, when it comes to judging transgressions, the gravity and lightness have not yet been clarified. Therefore, the Upāsakaśīla-sūtra is specially cited to distinguish the differences in karma, which have four distinct paradigms: first, matching the object against the mental intention yields four cases; second, differing gravity and lightness yields eight cases; third, differing high, middling, and low grades also yields eight cases; fourth, relying on the Sarvāstivāda treatises, differing with mind or without mind also yields eight cases. When judging offenses according to circumstances, all are subsumed therein. Thus the first fascicle of that sūtra states: there are heavy objects with light intention; there are light objects with heavy intention; there are heavy objects with heavy intention; and there are light objects with light intention. First, 'heavy object with light intention' is like killing one's father and mother without an evil mind. Second, 'light object with heavy intention' is like killing an animal with an evil mind. Third, 'heavy object with heavy intention' is like killing one's biological father and mother with an extremely evil mind. Fourth, 'light object with light intention' is like killing an animal with a casual mind.
