Also the Zabaozang jing says: When the Buddha was in the world, King Prasenajit once heard two palace attendants disputing a principle in their sleep. One said, 'I live by relying on the king.' The other replied, 'I rely on my own karma, not on the king.' Hearing this, the king approved of the one who relied on the king to live, and wished to reward him. He immediately dispatched an officer on duty to say to the queen, 'I shall now send a man to you; give him heavy gifts of wealth.' Soon after, he dispatched the one who lived by relying on the king to take the wine he drank and deliver it to the queen. When this man stepped out of the door, blood gushed from his nose so that he could not advance. He immediately asked the one who relied on karma to deliver it instead. When the queen saw him, she gave him heavy gifts of money, wealth, clothing, and necklaces. When he came before the king, the king saw him and was deeply astonished. He immediately summoned the one who lived by relying on the king and asked him, 'I sent you to go; why did you not go?' He then fully explained the circumstances to the king. Hearing this, the king sighed and said, 'The Buddha's words are true: one creates one's own karma and returns to receive the retribution oneself; it cannot be seized.' From this it is seen that the retribution of good and evil is induced by one's own karma; it is not something that devas or kings can bestow. One must create it oneself and obtain it oneself, giving rise to right view. Speaking of karmic fruition: nearby one obtains human and celestial [rebirth], and afar one induces the fruit of Buddhahood. If one violates the noble teachings, one fully suffers the aforementioned pains. The verse says:
