12.44

夫行善感樂。近趣人天。遠成佛果。作惡招苦。近獲三塗。遠乖聖道。愚人不信。智者能知。故有四生軀別。六趣形分。明暗異途。昇沈殊路。業緣之理皎然。因果之報恒式也。

Practicing goodness induces joy, leading in the short term to [rebirth among] humans and gods, and in the long term to the attainment of the fruit of buddhahood. Doing evil brings about suffering, incurring in the short term [rebirth in] the three wretched paths, and in the long term straying from the noble path. Foolish people do not believe this, but the wise can know it. Therefore there are bodily distinctions among the four modes of birth, and physical differentiations across the six destinies. Light and darkness follow different paths; rising and falling take different ways. The principle of karmic conditions is crystal clear; the retribution of cause and effect is an unchanging rule.
