Furthermore, the Qishi jing states: To the north of the great ocean, for the sake of the nāga kings and all garuḍa kings, a great tree grew, named Kuṭaśālmali (in the language of the Sui: 'Gathering of Deer'). The circumference at the base of this tree is seven yojanas, it enters the earth twenty yojanas, its trunk height is one hundred yojanas, and its branches and leaves spread to cover fifty yojanas. On the eastern side of the tree are egg-born nāgas and egg-born garuḍas. On the southern side of the tree are womb-born nāgas and womb-born garuḍas. On the western side of the tree are moisture-born nāgas and moisture-born garuḍas. On the northern side of the tree are apparitionally born nāgas and apparitionally born garuḍas. In these four places there are palaces, each six hundred yojanas in length and breadth, with seven tiers of walls, adorned with the seven jewels, subtle fragrances perfuming afar, and various birds singing in harmony. Moreover, when that egg-born garuḍa king wishes to seize an egg-born nāga, he flies to the eastern branch of the great Kuṭaśālmali tree. Having gazed upon the water of the great ocean, he then flies down and fans the great ocean with both wings, causing the water to part naturally for two hundred yojanas. Right there he takes an egg-born nāga in his beak, carries it out beyond the sea, and eats it at will. The egg-born garuḍa king can only capture egg-born nāgas and the like, and cannot capture womb-, moisture-, or apparitionally born nāgas. If a womb-born bird wishes to capture an egg-born nāga, he also goes toward the sea east of the tree to capture it. Furthermore, when a womb-born bird wishes to capture a womb-born nāga, he goes toward the sea south of the tree to capture it, the water parting for four hundred yojanas. This womb-born bird king can only capture nāgas of the two births of egg and womb, and cannot capture nāgas of the two births of moisture and apparitional.
