Furthermore, the New Vibhāṣā-śāstra says: In the past, there were butcher-traders of cattle who drove their cattle on a journey. The men were many and their provisions were exhausted; they were hungry, thirsty, hot, and fatigued. Resting, they deliberated, saying: 'These cattle are not our own after all. We should cut out their tongues to relieve our hunger and emptiness.' They immediately smeared the mouths of the cattle with salt. Craving the salty flavor, the cattle stuck out their tongues to lick it; [the men] immediately used sharp knives to sever them all at once, roasted them over fire, and ate them together. Having eaten, they went together to the water to wash and rinse their mouths, chewing tooth-sticks together. Having finished rubbing their teeth, they split them to scrape their tongues. Due to the force of evil karma, the tongue faculties of all the men, like rotten fruit, all fell off at once. (These are all immediate retributions, because the karma was heavy.)
