In a person's body, illnesses arising from wind amount to one hundred and one kinds; [those arising from] cold and heat combined each amount to one hundred and one kinds. In all, they total four hundred and four illnesses. Residing within the human body, just as fire arises from wood and burns it back, illnesses are also like this: just as [fire] arises dependent on the substance of the wood and turns back to endanger the person, so too the worms within the body stir and create unrest. Thirty-six components are nominally termed 'a person.' Covered by deception, they delude the foolish and ordinary, who falsely give rise to attachments and become intimate with one another. When the wise view it as empty, how could they approach it? It is like an earthenware vessel, which will eventually break; this body is false and deceptive, bound to face premature death or old age. The noble and the lowly are equally bewildered, not knowing it until death. It is like the four gates of a great city catching fire, burning in succession until reaching the eastern gate, reducing everything to ashes; birth, aging, illness, and death are also like this.
