Furthermore, the Bodhisattvabhūmi-śāstra states: "The sin of taking life can cause sentient beings to fall into the three evil destinies. If born among humans, they receive two kinds of retributions: first, a short lifespan; second, many illnesses. Thus, each of the ten unwholesome deeds possesses five kinds of retributions. First, why does taking life bring the suffering of the hells? Because by killing, one torments sentient beings; therefore, when the body breaks up and life ends, the myriad sufferings of the hells all come to torment oneself. Second, why does taking life result in emerging as an animal? Because killing lacks compassionate conduct and goes against human relations; therefore, when the punishment in the hells is exhausted, one receives an animal body. Third, why does taking life further lead to becoming a hungry ghost? Because taking life inevitably stems from a stingy mind and a craving for rich flavors; hence one becomes a hungry ghost. Fourth, why does taking life lead to receiving a short lifespan when born as a human? Because by killing, one injures and destroys the lives of creatures; hence one obtains a short lifespan. Fifth, why does taking life also bring many illnesses? Because killing violates bodily ease, causing myriad afflictions to vie in gathering upon oneself; hence one suffers many illnesses. One should know that taking life brings great suffering."
