Now, the function of wholesome and unwholesome karma is truly the harbinger of the three retributions; it is like form and shadow depending on each other, and an evident proof across the six destinies. As for the three retributions: pleasing the ears and eyes of the queen, turning against the deep kindness of the nine-colored deer; throwing oneself down alone to preserve the entire life of the king of beasts, while mutually undergoing the severe cruelty of five severed limbs—these are immediate retribution. Troops sink down into dark ravines, yet the spirit ascends as if whirling on a wheel without change; the body suffers bitter afflictions over successive generations, unaware of the prince's blinding—this is next-life retribution. Non-Buddhists give rein to calamity in [the heaven of] Neither Conception Nor Non-conception, permanently confused about the Dharma from beginning to end; like violent wildcats that grew wings, they fly and sink, suffering distress beyond reckoning—this is subsequent retribution. With profound discernment regarding the currents of drowning and loss across the three ages, the profound serpent arrives, transforming the encumbrance of a fragile body; causing realization in the chamber of the four truths and the three knowledges, causing escape from the darkness of the three retributions and five sufferings.
