Fourth, women's deceit and treachery: As the Jiu za piyu jing says: In ancient times, the son of a great family was handsome. He made a female statue of gold and said to his parents, 'Only if there is a woman like this will I take her.' At that time, in another state, there was a woman who was also beautiful, and she too made a golden statue. The golden girl addressed her parents, saying, 'Only if there is a man like this will I marry him.' The parents on both sides heard of this and arranged a marriage from afar. At that time, the king of the state raised a mirror to look at himself and said to his ministers, 'Is there anyone in the realm whose countenance is like mine?' The ministers replied, 'We have heard that in that other state there is a man who is incomparably handsome.' The king then sent an envoy to invite him. The envoy arrived and told him, 'The king wishes to see the worthy one.' He then prepared his chariot and set out. He thought to himself, 'The king has summoned me because of my brilliance.' He then returned to fetch his documents, and saw his wife committing adultery with a slave. Disheartened and resentful, his qi knotted up, and his facial complexion became withered and ugly. When the minister saw this, he thought he was emaciated from traveling on the road, and lodged him in the horse stables. At night in the stables, he saw the king's primary queen having illicit relations with a servant of the stables. He then realized: 'Even the king's great queen is like this, how much more so my wife!' His mind was liberated, his heart was pleased, and his complexion became as before. He then met with the king. The king asked, 'Why did you stay outside for three days?' He replied, 'When I set out, I had forgotten something and returned home to fetch it, where I saw my wife committing adultery with a slave. In anger, my complexion withered and altered; therefore I stayed in the stables for three days. Yesterday I saw the primary queen come and have illicit relations with the horse groom. If even the queen is like this, how much more so other people! My mind was liberated, and my complexion was restored.' The king said, 'If even my wife is like this, how much more so ordinary women!' Both of them renounced everything together, entered the mountains, shaved their hair to become śramaṇas, contemplated that one must not engage with women, and with unflagging vigor, both attained the path of a pratyekabuddha.
