Furthermore, the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna-sūtra says: 'What is non-killing? If minute insects are born in paddy, millet, broomcorn millet, or wheat, one does not pound or grind it; knowing that there are insects in it, one protects their lives, does not transfer it to others, and does not kill living beings. If oxen, horses, camels, or donkeys bear loads upon their backs, and worms are born within sores, when washing these sores with grain water, one does not use herbal medicines to cut off the lives of these worms; using bird feathers, one washes and wipes away the worms and places them among other foul, rotten, spoiling meat, preserving their lives. At the same time, one protects these donkeys and oxen, fearing their lives will be harmed, and also protects the lives of the worms down to the ants. Whether by day or by night, one does not act with heedlessness and has no thought of killing in the mind. If one sees sentient beings wishing to eat those worms, one barters for them with what they would eat, allowing them to escape.'
