The Candraprabha-kumāra-sūtra, also called the Sūtra Spoken by the Buddha on Śrīgupta, states: At that time, there was an elder named Śrīgupta. Adopting the schemes of the six non-Buddhist teachers, he wished to invite the Buddha and the saṅgha. He ordered a pit fifty-six feet deep to be dug outside the elder's middle gate, filled more than halfway with charcoal fire, and with slender iron bars as rafters, lightly covered with earth on top. He prepared various foods and drinks, placing poison within them, [thinking]: 'The fire pit will not fail to burn them, and the poisoned food will be enough to harm them. Plotting it this way, why worry that they will not die?' When it was done according to the instructions, the non-Buddhists were all delighted. Thereupon Śrīgupta went to the Buddha's dwelling and earnestly invited the Buddha and the noble assembly. At that time, the World-Honoured One, pitying his madness and foolishness and wishing to deliver him, silently accepted the invitation. Śrīgupta was inwardly delighted that it indeed went according to his plan. The poisonous fire of Mount Sumeru and the kalpa-fire that burns a thousand lands, or the sharp blades of swords, cannot shake the power of even a single hair of the Buddha. Now, wishing to destroy the Buddha with a fire pit and poisoned food is like a mosquito wishing to fell Mount Tai, or the wings of a gnat wishing to obstruct the sun and moon. In vain one destroys oneself; it would be better to repent early. At that time, the elder was covered by the hindrance of sins, and his mind was not opened to understanding. The World-Honoured One thought: 'Now accepting the invitation of the elder Śrīgupta will not be like ordinary occasions.' He extensively manifested spiritual power, shaking the ten directions. Hundreds of thousands of the noble assembly, together with nāgas and deities, flying through the sky and walking on the ground in incalculable numbers, arrived at the house at once to bring benefit. By his spiritual virtue, the Buddha immediately transformed the fire pit into a pool of seven treasures endowed with eight flavors. The drink and food became heavenly sweet dew, and those who ate were satisfied and joyful. The six teachers were terrified and fled in all directions. The elder submitted and took refuge, prostrating his head to the ground, weeping aloud at the Buddha's feet. Kneeling on both knees, he declared himself: 'Now I have awakened and obtained deliverance through the Buddha.' All those who had assembled rejoiced in the sound of the Dharma, and those who attained merit and were delivered were beyond count.
