Now, the confused affliction of sentient beings begins with grasping at the self; the erroneous delusion of common sorts has stinginess and greed as its root. For this reason, wholesome actions are as light as fine hair, while evil ones are as heavy as hill and mountain; blessings are as scant as spring ice, while poverty is as abundant as autumn rain. The net of the six sense faculties is not easily transcended; the ferry of the three poisons offers no means to cross. With bodies heavy, they constantly sink, just like fish in a river; flapping their wings desiring to fly, their difficulty equals that of birds in the heavens. This causes poverty upon poverty to succeed one another, competing to infringe and oppress, and suffering upon suffering to continue uninterruptedly, vying to come and inflict harm. They are like flying moths brushing against flames, bringing incineration upon themselves; like silkworms making cocoons, bound by no other. This truly stems from stinginess and the hindrance of greed, incurring the guilt of hunger and cold. Giving is the cause of wealth, constantly bringing abundance and joy.
