爾時彼龜。作如是念。此華鬘師妄語誑我。彼母患著床。其婦採華造鬘。欲賣以用活。命今作是言。定是誑我欲食我。故誘我出耳。是時彼龜。向華鬘師。而說偈言。
At that time, the turtle had this thought: "This garland-maker speaks falsely to deceive me. His mother is bedridden with illness, and his wife picks flowers and makes garlands, wishing to sell them to sustain their livelihood. For him to speak these words now is definitely to deceive me because he wishes to eat me; that is why he entices me to come out." At that time, the turtle spoke a verse to the garland-maker:
