"Next I preach the animals, / Who receive diverse forms; / Focus the mind to ponder and examine them, / And do not create conditions for them: / Speech slow and measured, / Not giving rise to anger, / Humble and emulating superiors— / [Such a one] has come from elephants. / Body large, foul and filthy, / Capable of enduring cold and heat, / Prone to stubborn anger hard to resolve— / [Such a one] has come from camels. / Traveling far and eating vigorously, / Not shunning perils and hardships, / Recalling affairs and discerning truth— / [Such a one] has come from horses. / Gracious, gentle, broad-minded and benevolent, / Capable of treading through cold and heat, / Actions lacking fixity— / [Such a one] has come from oxen. / Loud-voiced and without shame, / Having many attachments, / Not distinguishing right from wrong— / [Such a one] has come from donkeys. / Fearless toward elder and young, / Constantly greedy for meat, / Unflinching before all tasks— / [Such a one] has come from lions. / Body long and eyes round, / Roaming in open wastes, / Hating and envying wife and children— / [Such a one] has come from tigers. / Hair long and eyes small, / Having little anger, / Taking no delight in a single place— / [Such a one] has come from birds. / Nature fickle and inconstant, / Fond of killing and poisonous sorcery, / Finding solitary delight in burial mounds— / [Such a one] has come from foxes. / Faint voice and lacking vigor, / Free of lustful desires, / Loving neither wife nor children— / [Such a one] has come from wolves. / Disliking fine garments, / Spying on and catching illicit misdeeds, / Sleeping little and having much anger— / [Such a one] has come from dogs. / Body short and hair long, / Abundantly eating and sleeping, / Disliking clean places— / [Such a one] has come from pigs. / Fur yellow and impetuous, / Solitarily delighting in mountains and hills, / Greedy to eat flowers and fruits— / [Such a one] has come from monkeys. / Full of deceit and brazen-faced, / Fearing no hardship, / Knowing return and reciprocity in action— / [Such a one] has come from crows. / Feelings full of sensual lust, / Lacking in propriety and righteousness, / Mind lacking retention— / [Such a one] has come from doves. / Actions perverse and recalcitrant, / Contentious and enduring humiliation, / Unfilial to father and mother— / [Such a one] has come from cuckoos. / Knowing neither the Dharma / Nor what is wrong, / Day and night foolish and deluded— / [Such a one] has come from sheep. / Fond of deceit and eager to chat, / Frequently associating with noble clans, / Beloved by the multitudes— / [Such a one] has come from parrots. / Actions rash and hasty, / Delighting to be among crowds, / Speech excessively cumbersome— / [Such a one] has come from mynas. / Gait slow and unhurried, / Mind harbouring schemes, / Harming many living creatures— / [Such a one] has come from cranes. / Body small and fond of lust, / Mind not focused or stable, / Heart deluded upon seeing beauty— / [Such a one] has come from sparrows. / Eyes red and teeth short, / Spitting saliva whenever speaking, / Curling up the body when lying down— / [Such a one] has come from vipers. / Angered whenever speaking, / Not examining the meaning presented, / Mouth emitting fiery poison— / [Such a one] has come from the zhen bird. / Eating greedily in solitude, / Voice hoarse and choked, / Sleeping little at night— / [Such a one] has come from cats. / Burrowing through walls to steal, / Greedy for wealth and easily frightened, / Having neither close nor distant kin— / [Such a one] has come from rats. / Observe deeply these appearances: / They have come from animals."
