"Relying upon Mount Sumeru, / There are five kinds of gods; / Due to the conditions originally created, / Their marks are not the same: / Slender waist and thick legs, / Constantly fond of smiling— / The wise should observe: / [Such a one] has come from the Qu devas. / Mind fond of subtlety, / Having little property, / Frightened upon seeing fighting— / [Such a one] has come from the Shi devas. / Body tall and pale, / Complexion upright and handsome, / Disliking firelight— / [Such a one] has come from the Bo devas. / Constantly harboring joy and gladness, / Not alarmed upon hearing of evil, / Not receiving it from another— / [Such a one] has come from the Joy devas. / Pondering and enduring suffering, / Fond of analyzing meanings, / Compassionate and filial to parents— / [Such a one] has come from the Viśā devas. / In the past taking no pleasure in household life, / Fond of wandering in woods and thickets, / Thoughts lingering on female charms— / [Such a one] has come from the Three devas. / Though possessing much wealth and treasure, / Born in a lowly family, / Mind delighting in purity— / [Such a one] has come from the Three devas. / Following one's own bent in practice, / What one undertakes not succeeding, / Hopes severed yet vows attained— / [Such a one] has come from the Yāma Devas. / Mind delighting in illicit intimacy with others, / Not guarding one's own wife, / Controlled by spirits— / [Such a one] has come from the Paranirmitavaśavartin Devas. / Serving father and mother, / Constantly taking principles and righteousness as the rule, / One's own shortcomings borne by others— / [Such a one] has come from the Tuṣita Devas. / Seeking the Way by what is not the Way, / Mind devoid of stingy thoughts, / Not delighting in dwelling at home— / [Such a one] has come from the Brahmā devas. / Aspiration and nature simple, / Constantly greedy for sleep, / Nor understanding the Dharma— / [Such a one] has come from the Asaññasatta Devas. / Sentient beings of the six destinies / Each have their original roots; / Their natures and conducts are not the same, / Their dispositions and conduct distinct."
