18.47

第五復有眾生。蹇吃瘖瘂口不能言。若有所說。閉目舉手口不言了。何罪所致。佛言。以前世時。坐誹謗三尊。輕毀聖道。論他好醜。求人長短。強誣良善。憎嫉賢人。故獲斯罪。

"Fifth, there are sentient beings who are stammering, mute, and unable to speak. When they have something to say, they close their eyes, raise their hands, and cannot speak clearly. What sin brought this about?" The Buddha said: "In their past lives, it was due to slandering the Three Jewels, disparaging the noble path, discussing others' merits and faults, finding flaws in people, falsely accusing the good and honest, and envying and hating the worthy. Therefore they incurred this sinful retribution."
