18.61

第十九復有眾生。少小孤寒。無有父母兄弟。為他作使辛苦活命。長大成人橫羅殃禍。縣官所縛繫閉牢獄。無人追餉飢窮困苦。無所告及。何罪所致。佛言。以前世時。坐喜捕拾。鵰鷲鷹鷂。熊羆虎豹。枷鎖而畜。孤此眾生。父母兄弟常恒憂悲。悲鳴叫裂哀感人心。不能供養常苦飢餓。骨立皮連求死不得。故獲斯罪。

"Nineteenth, there are sentient beings who are orphaned and destitute from youth, having neither parents nor siblings, serving others in hard labor to sustain their lives. When they grow into adulthood, they are struck by disaster, bound by officials and locked in prison, with no one to send them provisions, starving in destitute misery with nowhere to turn. What sin brought this about?" The Buddha said: "In their past lives, it was due to enjoying catching eagles, vultures, falcons, sparrowhawks, bears, brown bears, tigers, and leopards, keeping them bound in cages and chains, orphaning these creatures so that their parents and siblings were constantly grieving, crying out in anguish and rending human hearts, yet they could not provide for them, leaving them constantly tortured by starvation, skin clinging to bone, seeking death but unable to die. Therefore they incurred this sinful retribution."
