Now, a person has four limbs and five viscera. In waking and sleeping, breathing out and breathing in, the essential qi circulates; flowing, it forms nutritive and defensive qi; diffusing, it forms complexion; emitting, it forms voice. This is the regular pattern of human beings. Yang utilizes the essence, while yin utilizes the form; this is shared by all people. When it falls into disorder: steaming gives rise to heat, obstruction gives rise to cold, knotting forms tumors and wens, sinking forms carbuncles and ulcers, rushing forms agitation, and exhausting forms parching. Therefore, a skilled physician guides it with needles and stone lancets and rescues it with medicines and remedies; a sage harmonizes it through royal virtue and assists it through human affairs. Thus, in the body there are illnesses that can be cured, and in heaven and earth there are disasters that can be dispelled.
