Fifth, concerning mutual visibility and difference: According to the Abhidharmakośa-śāstra, intermediate states belonging to the same destiny of birth definitely see each other. If a person has the purest divine eye, being of the category of insight of that single destiny, that person can also see those born there. If one has the karmically acquired divine eye, one cannot see it because it is extremely subtle. As the Sarvāstivāda school says, if beings are to be born together in the human destiny, being of the same intermediate state of the human destiny, they can see one another; this principle is fixed. They cannot see the intermediate states of other destinies. If a person has cultivated and attained the divine eye, this divine eye is of the path-category and can see the form of the intermediate state. If one has the karmically acquired divine eye, one cannot see the form of the intermediate state, because the form of the intermediate state is more subtle than other forms. According to the Sammatīya school, the intermediate state of the deva destiny can fully see the forms of the intermediate states of the five destinies. The intermediate state of the human destiny can see four destinies, with the exception of the intermediate state of the deva destiny, which is not what it can see. In this manner, eliminating the prior ones in sequence, down to the intermediate state of the hell destiny, which cannot see the intermediate states of the four prior destinies: it only sees the intermediate state of the hell destiny.
