Also, the Mahāsāṃghika, Sarvāstivāda, and Mahīśāsaka Vinayas and others state: If there is no other cure, an exception allows a sick bhikṣu to take garlic. He is permitted for seven days to stay in a small room on one side. He must not lie on the bedding or mattresses of the Saṅgha, nor may he go to the places where the assembly relieves nature or to the lecture hall. Furthermore, he may not accept invitations or eat amidst the Saṅgha, nor may he approach the Buddha to pay homage; he is permitted to pay homage from afar downwind. When seven days have been fulfilled and he has bathed and perfumed his robes, only then may he enter the assembly. If one suffers from sores and the physician instructs that fragrant medicine is required for treatment, the Buddha instructed that one must first make offerings to the Buddha, and only then is it permitted to smear it on the body, remaining in a secluded place, just as in the previous procedure. (If the renunciant nature of purity still requires such procedures, how much less may foul, common worldlings casually indulge in eating them?)
