20.71

又賢愚經云。佛在世時。羅閱城邊有一汪水。污泥不淨多諸糞穢。國中人民以屎尿投。中有一大蟲。其形像蛇加有四足。於其汪水東西馳走。或沒或出經歷年載。常處其中受苦無量。爾時世尊將諸比丘。至彼坑所問諸比丘。汝識此蟲宿緣行不。諸比丘咸皆不知。

Furthermore, the Xianyu jing states: When the Buddha was in the world, beside the city of Rājagṛha there was a pool of water, muddy and impure, with much excrement and filth, into which the people of the country cast their feces and urine. In it was a great worm, shaped like a snake but with four legs, which scurried east and west in the pool of water, sometimes submerging and sometimes emerging, for many years, constantly dwelling therein and enduring boundless suffering. At that time, the Bhagavat led the monks to that pit and asked the monks: 'Do you recognize the past causes and deeds of this worm?' The monks all did not know.
