Furthermore, the Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā-śāstra states: "When a householder bodhisattva enters a Buddhist monastery, as he is first about to enter, outside the monastery gate he should throw his five limbs to the ground and generate this thought: 'This is the dwelling place of good people; it is the dwelling place of those who practice loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. For this reason I must pay homage.' If he sees the bhikṣus endowed with complete deportment, having seen them he should bow in prostration with a respectful and reverent mind, and draw near to inquire after their well-being." Furthermore, the Zi'ai jing states: "At that time a king went to the Buddha's place. Seeing the vihāra from afar, he descended from his chariot, put away his canopy, unbuckled his sword, took off his shoes, clasped his hands, and walked straight forward."
