如菩薩本行經云。佛言。我昔無數劫來。放捨身命。於閻浮提作大國王。便持刀授與左右。勅令剜身作千燈處。出其身肉深如大錢。以蘇油灌中。而作千燈。安炷已訖。語婆羅門言。先說經法然後炙燈。而婆羅門為王說偈言。

As the Pusa benxing jing states: The Buddha said, "Innumerable kalpas ago in the past, I relinquished my body and life. When I was a great king in Jambudvīpa, I took a knife and gave it to my attendants, ordering them to carve out a thousand lamp cavities upon my body, digging out my flesh to the depth of a large coin. Filling them with butter oil, they made a thousand lamps. After the wicks were placed, I said to a brāhmaṇa, 'First preach the scriptural Dharma, and afterwards ignite the lamps.' The brāhmaṇa then spoke a verse for the king:"
