4.121

又百緣經云。昔佛在世時。迦毘羅衛城中。有一長者。其家巨富財寶無量。不可稱計。生一男兒。端正殊妙與眾超絕。其兒初生。於虛空中有一大幡。遍覆城上。父母見已歡喜無量。因為立字名波多迦。年漸長大求佛出家。得阿羅漢。三明六通。具八解脫。比丘見已而便白佛言。此波迦多。宿殖何福。生便端正與眾超絕。於虛空中有大幡蓋。遍覆城上。又值世尊出家得道。佛告比丘。乃往過去九十一劫。毘婆尸佛入涅槃後。時有王名槃頭末帝。收其舍利造四寶塔。高一由旬。而供養之時有一人。於彼塔邊施設大會。作一長幡懸著塔上。發願而去。緣是功德。從是以來。九十一劫不墮惡道。天上人中。常有大幡覆蔭其上。受福快樂。乃至今者遭值於我。出家得道。

Furthermore, the Avadānaśataka says: Long ago, when the Buddha was in the world, there was a householder in the city of Kapilavastu whose family was immensely wealthy, with boundless and incalculable wealth and jewels. He fathered a boy who was handsome, extraordinary, and far superior to the multitude. When this child was first born, a great banner appeared in the sky, completely covering the city above. His parents, having seen it, rejoiced boundlessly, and thereupon gave him the name Patāka. Gradually growing older, he sought the Buddha and went forth from the household, attaining arhatship, endowed with the three knowledges, the six supernormal powers, and the eight liberations. When the bhikṣus saw this, they said to the Buddha: "What merit did this Patāka plant in the past, that from birth he was handsome and far superior to the multitude, that a great banner-canopy in the sky completely covered the city above, and that he has moreover met the Bhagavat, gone forth, and attained the path?" The Buddha told the bhikṣus: "Ninety-one eons in the past, after the Buddha Vipaśyin entered nirvāṇa, there was a king named Bandhumat who collected his relics, built a four-jewelled stūpa one yojana high, and made offerings to it. At that time, a man arranged a great assembly beside that stūpa, made a long banner, hung it upon the stūpa, made an aspiration, and departed. By virtue of this merit, from that time onward for ninety-one eons, he has not fallen into the evil destinies. In heaven and among humans, a great banner has constantly sheltered and shaded him above, and he has enjoyed blessed happiness, culminating in his meeting me today, going forth, and attaining the path."
