Now, realizing the principle by means of phenomena necessarily relies on marks to guide toward the true; looking up in reverence to the holy countenance depends on flowers and incense to present as offerings. Thus, precious blossoms flutter in the wind, holding splendid colors that resemble red lotuses; celebrated incenses waft their rich fragrances, like light clouds and resembling green mists. Yet, as the sun expands [its rays], night gathers in; as the moon rises, darkness is extinguished. A lamp's dispelling of darkness is like wisdom's melting away of obstacles. Therefore, by reverently bowing to the King of Lamps, [Dharmākara] accomplished the honor of Amitābha; by exerting effort to sustain the light, [Megha] then received the name of Dīpaṅkara. The light condition of a reed torch brought nearby the radiance of a golden bodily form; the slight cause of offering a candle resulted afar in the retribution of the divine eye. How much more so when one awakens this great wisdom and unfolds that supreme light! Therefore, on the day of his impending death, King Aśoka made eighty-four thousand lamps in all, illuminating everywhere eighty-four thousand stūpas. Furthermore, divine banners fluttered aloft, hoping to soar across the chiliocosm; pearls and purple silks shone against one another, emitting brilliance across ten billion [realms]. When the wind of wisdom stirs, proof of deeds leading to pure ascent is evident; when the gentle breeze arrives, the retribution of a cakravartin is inexhaustible.
