If a bodhisattva personally makes offerings with their own hands to the Tathāgata and caityas, not relying on laziness to have others do it, this is called the bodhisattva's offerings made by oneself. If a bodhisattva does not make offerings alone to the Tathāgata and caityas, but universally causes relatives, laypeople, and monastics all to make offerings together, this is called offerings made together by oneself and others. If a bodhisattva possesses only a small amount of goods and, with a mind of compassion, gives them to those poor, suffering, and merit-deprived sentient beings, causing them to make offerings to the Tathāgata and caityas so that they may attain peace and happiness, rather than acting for oneself, this is called offerings made by others. One who makes offerings oneself obtains a great retribution; one who causes others to make offerings obtains an even greater retribution; and one who makes offerings both oneself and through others obtains the greatest of great retributions. If a bodhisattva makes various offerings of clothing, food, and miscellaneous treasures to the Tathāgata and caityas, this is called offerings of material goods.
