Indeed, reflecting upon the root of impermanence, suffering, and emptiness, and contemplating the source of birth, old age, sickness, and death—through the long night one laments the anguish of hanging upside down; drifting and drowning, one pities the swiftness of following the current. Contemplating such distress is truly and deeply fearful. This is truly because the puṇyakṣetra is slight and thin, and faithful offerings are hard to digest. Fasting and precepts are not firm, being like unbaked clay pots that are easy to break and hard to keep intact, or like frost and dew; the attachment to 'I' and 'person' grows ever stronger, adhering more firmly than glue or lacquer. Not fearing the calamities of accumulated kalpas, one worries only for the life of this single body. Hence, eating to satiety and sleeping long, how does one differ from suckling pigs and dogs? Breaking the fast to eat at night is no different from the destiny of hungry ghosts. Therefore, donors lose the blessing of supporting those worthy of offerings, and the saṃgha harms the excellence of the fertile field.
