Furthermore, the Zabaozang jing says: In the past, in the kingdom of Kuruṣa, there was a King Duḥsaha. He went to the hall in his garden and saw a golden cat enter from the northeast corner and exit at the southwest corner. Having seen it, the king immediately sent men to dig, and they found a bronze basin holding three hu, full of gold coins. Digging gradually deeper, they found another basin, and in this manner successively found three tiers of basins, each holding three hu and all full of gold coins. Continuing to dig sideways for a distance of five li, at every step they found bronze basins, all full of gold coins. Although the king obtained the coins, he was afraid and did not dare to use them, wondering at the cause. He immediately went to Venerable Kātyāyana and explained the circumstances. The Venerable replied to the king: "This is the retribution of blessings acquired from Your Majesty's past causes; simply use them without worry." The king then asked about the past causes and conditions. The Venerable replied: "Ninety-one kalpas ago in the past, after Vipaśyin Buddha entered parinirvāṇa, among the bhikṣus of his remaining Dharma, some set up a seat and placed an alms bowl at a crossroads, converting people from atop it and saying: 'Who can take wealth and place it in this firm treasury? Once entered into this treasury, neither kings, thieves, water, nor fire can snatch it away.' At that time there was a poor man who had previously earned three coins from selling firewood. Seeing the monks preaching, he rejoiced and gave them away, placing these coins back into the bowl, making a vow, and departing. Walking five li toward his home, he rejoiced at every step. Arriving at his gate and about to enter, he turned toward the monks from afar, sincerely bowed his head in homage, made a vow, and entered. That poor man was Your Majesty's present person. Because of joyfully offering three coins to the monks in the past, in life after life you have been exalted and regularly obtain these three tiers of bronze basins full of gold coins. Because you rejoiced at every step over the course of five li, you constantly have these gold coins across five li. For this reason, when practicing giving, one should give with utmost sincerity and joy, and not produce a mind of regret."
