8.46

我實是畜獸　名曰人頭鹿
汝雖是鹿身　名為鹿頭人
以理而言之　非以形為人
若能有慈悲　雖獸實是人
我從今日始　不食一切肉
我以無畏施　且可安汝意

"I am truly a beast, / Named a deer with a human head; / Though you have the body of a deer, / You are named a human with a deer's head. / Speaking according to principle, / It is not by bodily form that one is a human; / If one can have maitrī-karuṇā, / Though an animal, one is truly a human. / Beginning from this day, / I shall not eat any meat; / By bestowing fearlessness upon you, / For now I may set your mind at ease."
