8.51

時鼈急捉獼猴。却行欲入水。獼猴急怖。便作是念。若我入水必死無疑。然苦痛力弱。任鼇迴轉流離牽曳。遇值嶮處。鼇時仰臥。是時獼猴兩手抱鼈。作是念言。誰當為我脫此苦難。獼猴曾知仙人住處。彼當救我。便抱此鼈向彼處去。仙人遙見便作是念。咄哉異事。念是獼猴為作何等欲戲弄耶。獼猴故言。婆羅門。是何等寶物滿鉢持來得。何等信而來向我。爾時獼猴即說偈言。

Then the turtle gripped the monkey tightly and retreated backwards, intending to enter the water. Panicked and terrified, the monkey thought: "If I enter the water, I will surely die without a doubt." Yet from pain and weakness, he was dragged along wherever the turtle turned. Encountering a steep, rough place, the turtle turned onto its back. At that time, the monkey held the turtle with both hands and thought: "Who will deliver me from this distress?" The monkey knew where the rṣi lived: "He will surely rescue me." He carried this turtle and went to that place. Seeing him from afar, the rṣi thought: "Alas, what a strange affair! What is this monkey doing? Does he wish to play tricks?" The monkey had not yet spoken when the rṣi asked: "Brāhmaṇa, what precious object is this that fills your bowl and that you carry here? What faith brings you to me?" Then the monkey spoke a verse:
