There was also another bhikṣu named Ānanda, who said to the Bhagavat: "I recall that formerly I was born in the city of Rājagṛha as the son of a commoner. Malignant sores broke out on my body that could not be cured by treatment. A friend who was a man of the Way came and said to me: 'You should bathe the saṃgha and take the bathwater to wash your sores. They may be cured, and you may also gain merit.' I was overjoyed and went straight to the monastery. With utmost sincerity and redoubled reverence, I made a new well, fragrant oils, and bath implements, and bathed the saṃgha. Taking the bathwater, I washed my sores, and immediately received relief and was cured. By virtue of this merit, wherever I was born I was handsome, radiant with a golden color, and free of dirt and defilement. For ninety-one kalpas I constantly attained pure merit, for the virtues of the saṃgha are vast and far-reaching. Now I have again encountered the Buddha, the defilements of my mind have been dispelled, and I have attained the status of an arhat." At that time in the assembly there was a bhikṣuṇī named Āmrapālī, who said to the Buddha: "I recall in a past life being born in the country of Vārāṇasī as a poor woman. At that time there was a Buddha in the world named Kāśyapa. He was surrounded by a great assembly, expounding the Dharma. Sitting among the assembly, I was filled with joy upon hearing the sūtra. I wished to make an offering, but seeing that I had nothing, I reflected on my poverty and lowliness and was deeply saddened. I went to another's garden and orchard to beg for fruit and melons to offer to the Buddha. I received through begging a single mango, large, fragrant, and fine. Carrying a bowl of water along with the one mango, I presented them to Kāśyapa Buddha and the saṃgha. The Buddha knew my utmost sincerity; he made a dedication of merit and accepted them, distributing the water and mango universally to all. By virtue of this blessing, after my life ended I was born in heaven as a heavenly queen. When reborn down in the human world, I did not come from a womb; for ninety-one kalpas I was born within mango blossoms, handsome, fresh, and pure, constantly conscious of my past lives. Now I have encountered the Bhagavat, who has opened the eye of the Way for me."
