As the *Sūtra on the Fundamental Vows Inquired by Maitreya Bodhisattva* says: 'Ānanda said to the Buddha: "Maitreya has attained the endurance of dharmas (*dharmakṣānti*) for such a long time; why does he not swiftly attain the unexcelled, correct, and true path and achieve supreme correct awakening?" The Buddha told Ānanda: "A bodhisattva does not realize correct awakening on account of four matters. What are the four? First, purifying the realm; second, protecting the realm; third, purifying all; fourth, protecting all. These are the four matters. When Maitreya originally sought buddhahood, he did not realize buddhahood because of these four matters." The Buddha told Ānanda: "When I originally sought buddhahood, I also had these four. However, Maitreya brought forth the intention thirty-two kalpas before me, and only after him did I bring forth the intention for the path. In this Bhadrakalpa, through great diligence I surpassed nine kalpas, attaining the unexcelled, correct, and true path and achieving supreme correct awakening." The Buddha told Ānanda: "I achieved supreme correct awakening through ten matters. What are the ten? First, of everything one possesses, there is nothing begrudged; second, wives and concubines; third, sons and daughters; fourth, head and eyes; fifth, hands and feet; sixth, countries and lands; seventh, precious treasures and wealth; eighth, marrow and brain; ninth, blood and flesh; tenth, not begrudging bodily life. Through these ten matters I swiftly attained the Buddha path."'
