Furthermore, the *Bodhisattvabhūmi* states: If a bodhisattva's dāna causes another to suffer, whether through extortion, or through cheating and fraud, or through seeking unlawfully, then, whether by one's own power or another's power, one should not comply with their desires. For the sake of sentient beings, one would rather cast off one's own body and life than comply with their desires. If it brings about extortion and distress, one should not give; this is not the time for a bodhisattva to practice pure dāna. As for external gifts that a bodhisattva does not give: if there are sentient beings who ask for women, fire, knives, liquor, acting as go-betweens, performing plays, and all manner of unlawful things—to such petitioners, the bodhisattva does not give. If they were to give, much evil would arise, leading to falling into the evil destinies without reaching the other shore. But if someone comes to ask for a part of my own body, one must promptly give it, without needing to evaluate that other person or harbor a hesitant, backward mind.
