Furthermore, the *Damamūka-nidāna-sūtra* states: The Buddha's maternal aunt, Mahāprajāpatī, after the Buddha had left home, spun and wove with her own hands, preparing beforehand a bolt of golden cotton cloth. Storing this thought in her mind and binding her recollection, she waited only for the Buddha. Upon being able to see the Buddha, joy surged to the marrow of her heart, and she promptly took this cloth and presented it to the Tathāgata. The Buddha told Gautamī: 'Take this cloth and go offer it to the Saṃgha.' Prajāpatī addressed the Buddha again, saying: 'Ever since the Buddha left home, my mind has constantly longed for you; therefore, I spun and wove it with my own hands, intending in my heart to wait for the Buddha. I only wish you will deign to pity me and accept it on my behalf.' The Buddha told her: 'I know that mother's focused mind wished to give it to me; however, with a mind of personal affection, the merit is not broad and vast. If you give it to the Saṃgha, the retribution obtained will be far greater. Because I know this matter, I urge you accordingly.'
