Second, such unwholesome karma further has eight varieties differing in gravity and lightness. What are the eight? (1) Heavy preliminary preparation, light primary act and conclusion; (2) heavy primary act, light preliminary preparation and conclusion; (3) heavy conclusion, light preliminary preparation and primary act; (4) heavy preliminary preparation and primary act, light conclusion; (5) heavy preliminary preparation and conclusion, light primary act; (6) heavy primary act and conclusion, light preliminary preparation; (7) heavy preliminary preparation, primary act, and conclusion; (8) light preliminary preparation, primary act, and conclusion. The object is one and the same, yet through the power of mind one receives heavy or light fruits. For example, the ten wholesome paths of action have three stages: first, preliminary preparation; second, the primary act; third, conclusion. If there is a person who can diligently bow to and make offerings to father and mother, teachers, elders, upādhyāyas, and virtuous persons, politely greeting them in advance and speaking softly, this is called the preliminary preparation. When the act is done, being able to cultivate mindfulness, rejoicing without regret, this is called the conclusion. Concentrating and applying oneself at the time of doing it is called the primary act. As it is with the ten wholesome acts, so it is with the ten unwholesome acts.
