Furthermore, the Upāsaka-[śīla]-sūtra says: 'A person of wisdom, when encountering vile revilement, should reflect thus: "The words of this revilement do not arise at the same time. When the first word arises, the subsequent word has not yet arisen; once the subsequent word has arisen, the first word has already ceased. If they are not simultaneous, how can it be a revilement? It is simply the sound of wind. Why should I be angry?"' Therefore the Dazhidu lun says: 'When a bodhisattva contemplates sentient beings, even if they revile him for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, he does not give rise to a mind of ill will; even if they praise him for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, he also does not rejoice. He fully understands that sounds arise and cease like a dream, like an echo.'
