12.36

"Doing what should not be done,
and not doing what should be done,
one is burned by the fire of regret and vexation,
and in future lives falls into the evil destinies.
If a person is able to repent of sins,
having repented, let him sorrow no more.
In this way the mind is peaceful and joyful;
one should not constantly brood upon it.
If there are the two kinds of regret—
either that what should be done was not done,
or that what should not be done was done—
these are the marks of a foolish person.
It is not through a regretful mind
that what was not done can be done;
once all evil deeds have been done,
one cannot make them undone."
